So, you've found your perfect new home and have all the boxes ready to be packed. But you might be so focused on the packing and moving that you may forget to complete few crucial things when you move into your new home!

Before you start moving all your heavy furniture and belongings, you will want to double check to make sure you have done these five things first.

1) Change your address and update contact information

As soon as you can, start changing your address on all your accounts. This includes magazines’ subscriptions, bank information, insurance policies as well as putting in a change of address form at you post office. Also, make sure that you update your address on the electoral roll, so you can take part in any local government elections that are coming up.

2) Clean

Even if it looks as if the previous owners did a great job of leaving the home clean, you should go through and thoroughly clean it yourself for safety measures. If possible, before moving in any of your belongings, have your new home cleaned from top to bottom. You can hire a cleaning crew to do this for you. Also, make sure you have the carpets deep cleaned, as well.

3) Service and clean mechanical systems

The heating and cooling systems should be one of the first things you have someone come in and service. You do not want your system to suddenly stop working in the middle of those cold New England winters. Ask your new neighbors who they recommend or use. Also, it's recommended to have a service contract from whoever you choose to go with.

4) Change the locks

Through the buying process of your new home, there are a number of people who most likely have a copy of the keys. As soon as the closing is finalized on your new home, either have a locksmith come in and replace the locks or you can install new ones yourself. It is always a recommended precautionary measure to have the locks replaced as soon as possible.

5) Change your insurance coverage

When you are moving into your new home, you will want to make sure that you are completely covered during the move. This means you want the policy on your old home to end the day after your move out and the one on your new home should start the day before you move in. Contact your insurance policy provider to ensure that you are entirely covered on the transition day when you are in between homes.

Of course, there will be many more things you will need to take care of when you move, but that shouldn’t stop you from enjoying your new home! If you need any help, it’s always recommended to call in the pros.
